Simple Ways to Boost Your Immune System and Stay Healthy

There are a lot of products that claim to boost immunity, but healthy habits are actually the best way to support immune function. This includes regularly washing your hands, getting enough sleep and exercising on a regular basis.

These basic steps can improve your overall health and help keep you from getting sick this season.

1. Eat a Balanced Diet

Many supplements and products claim to support immune system function. But a healthy immune system is more complex than a simple mix of vitamins and minerals packaged into a pill or powder.

The best way to build up the parts of your immune system that fight germs and illness is to eat a balanced diet, including lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, dairy, lean protein and healthy fats.

Prebiotics, like those found in Jerusalem artichokes, green bananas or plantains, jicama root and asparagus, are also good for your immune system because they feed the bacteria that protect you from infection. Spices such as garlic, turmeric and ginger have long been believed to have immune-boosting properties, too. And don’t skip out on citrus fruits, which are rich in vitamin C, which boosts white blood cells that fight infection.
